We've waited so long! The Tea Bagger Manifesto!

Okay, MeanMesa visitors, read it and weep.  For the longest time we on the progressive side have assumed that the neo-cons would remain perfectly happy being the second string chorus line for the "Party of No."  Not the case -- not the cast, at all.

The "political geniuses" who continue to desperately redefine the essentially non-existent Tea Baggers -- always hoping that some issue somewhere will finally gain traction with the exhausted American voter -- have now stepped out in front of the fray.

Of course, this doesn't mean that the Baggers have an actual platform, candidate or party.  Those things require actual thought, effort and participation, apparently tasks which are, well, a bit too demanding for the white, geriatric, over weight whining circus.

No problem.  The Public Relations section of Dick Armey's law firm has handled all the heavy lifting.  They pumped out the Manifesto, pre-packaged and ready to go to provide badly needed talking points for all the Baggers.  What follows is the email that Freedom Works sent to MeanMesa.

Sneak Peak of Our New Book Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto

Dear MeanMesa,

The limited government movement has made a huge impact on the country in the last couple of years. The resurgence of pro-liberty ideas and organizations has mostly been due to the emergence of what has become known as the Tea Party movement, a limited government protest movement fueled by opposition to big government at all levels. Tea Party activists across the country have been driving public opinion and waking up Americans to the ideas of liberty, free markets and personal responsibility.

FreedomWorks has been a part of this movement from its inception, with many of our members leading or joining early tea party protests around the country. We have tried to assist this spontaneous, grassroots, decentralized, fiercely independent movement of limited government activists. We have met thousands of the regular, patriotic Americans that lead this movement at the ground level, and who organized the massive 9/12/2009 Taxpayer March on Washington.
These experiences are what inspired us to write our new book, Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto. Our book traces the beginnings of this movement, and highlights some of the people who have made this movement the historic force for liberty it has become. Our goal is to drive this book to the top of the charts, so please pre-order your copy today and encourage your friends and family to buy theirs too! Better yet, at the low, low, pre-sale price of $13.49, why not treat them to a copy?

To whet your appetite, we are excited to offer you, as a FreedomWorks member, a sneak peak at a special part of the book. CLICK HERE to download the first installment of our Grassroots Activism Toolkit, which is a guide for all limited government activists that want to make a difference in their own community. This first section covers initial steps in forming your group, networking and building coalitions and how to organize a tea party protest. Over the next four weeks look for the rest of the Grassroots Action Toolkit, section by section. The advice we provide in the toolkit should help you recruit, retain members, educate the public, organize events, run meetings, raise money and manage media relations.

We hope that you will not only find the narrative in the book inspiring, but that you will use the book to educate others about the truth regarding our movement. We also hope that the Grassroots Activism Toolkit will be put to good use, helping local groups around the country accomplish their goals, and become better advocates for limited government.

We here at FreedomWorks are excited about our new book, and the upcoming campaign/book tour that begins the day of the big book launch in New York City on August 17th. Please continue to check out our website in the days to come as we organize events near you! Together we will Take America Back in 2010, and build a long-lasting community of pro-liberty groups that defend liberty and save our republic from the prospect of socialism in America.

Sincerely,

Dick Armey and Matt Kibbe, FreedomWorks

P.S. We hope that you will join us in a few weeks for the 9/12/2010 Taxpayer March on Washington! Please CLICK HERE for the agenda, and to find ways to connect with other people that are chartering buses from your area. See you on September 12th!

More Hilarious Emails from "Freedom Works"

Does anyone believe a snake can speak?
Although the last time a famous snake actually spoke, it was talking to Eve in the Garden of Eden.  However, MeanMesa, a blog committed to presenting features which reflect contemporary reality, from time to time will publish the emails we receive from the suspicious fascist  Dick Armey -- a, so-to-speak New Testament snake -- and his law firm's cash cow "Freedom Works."

Of course, "Freedom Works" masquerades as some sort of honest, grass roots affair providing a voice for the otherwise rather dully mute Tea Bags.  In actual fact the organization is a carefully crafted "mouthpiece" for some of the wealthiest -- and most reactionary -- players in our electorate.

By relentlessly trotting out freshly stagnated "talking points" from the Great Factory of the Republican National Committee, "Freedom Works" diligently strives to maintain a state of perpetual panic among the hill billies, bigots and other "information challenged" citizens willing to vote on demand for every loser the party of Palin-Beck-and-Limbaugh can herd into candidacy.

These profoundly cynical "patriots" are certain that their campaign checks and pricey law firms such as the one sponsoring "Freedom Works" can sway any election they wish.  As citizens concerned with the future and honor of our own country, it falls to us to keep track of the latest clouds of lies these miscreants are vomiting forth.

It also falls to us to make sure that no one -- absolutely no one -- forgets what this bunch did to each and every one of us the last time they held power.  We are still paying the price for the damage the autocracy of Junior Bush and his criminal friends inflicted on our country.

So, take a quick look at the latest from, uh, "Freedom Works."

Watch the Take America Back Video Blueprint

Dear MeanMesa,

FreedomWorks' campaign to "Take America Back" is fully underway, and already claiming major victories for freedom and the Tea Party movement.

The momentum is undeniable -- from champion of freedom Rand Paul running away with the Kentucky GOP Senate primary to Tea Party favorite Mike Lee ousting Big Government RINO Sen. Bob Bennett in Utah -- all over America voters are already casting ballots to reclaim our fading liberties.

As Election Day approaches, FreedomWorks' Take America Back campaign will continue to support conservative values in primary races so voters will have clear pro-freedom choices in the general election in November.

But the Left realizes how much is at stake this November. They are ramping up their fundraising machine and emptying out their campaign war chests -- it's been reported that liberal special interests are already committing over $100 million to quash the Tea Party movement's influence in the midterm elections.

That's why it's so important we do everything we can to counter their efforts.

To learn more about our "Take America Back" campaign and how you can help, please watch the video below. I hope it will inspire you to get involved in this historic movement for lasting political change in America.

Thank you for all you have done and continue to do in defense of freedom. With your involvement and support, we WILL Take America Back in November!

Sincerely,

Dick Armey
Chairman, FreedomWorks

FreedomWorks Membership Update - June 7th

Dear MeanMesa,

This has been a busy year at FreedomWorks. We have a lot going on, including major legislative battles, big elections, fundraising for campaigns and other major projects, so we wanted to take a few minutes to make sure FreedomWorks Members like you are up to speed.

New book: ‘Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto'

FreedomWorks is proud to announce that we have signed a contract with Harper Collins to set the record straight on the tea party movement with our new book "Give us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto" by Dick Armey and Matt Kibbe. You can pre-order the book on Amazon.com or other online retailers now. Be sure to look for opportunities to meet the authors as they travel the country in the weeks ahead to do book signing events, town hall meetings and campaign rallies in dozens of cities across the country.

Take America Back in 2010!

While it's still early, things are looking good for the FreedomWorks PAC ‘Take America Back' campaign to get rid of big government politicians and replace them with limited government conservatives in Congress. Our movement has already removed Utah Senator Bob Bennett, elevated Rand Paul to the leading contender in Kentucky and ended the political careers of Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania and Parker Griffith in Alabama. But we still need to raise a lot of money to compete with leftist groups like the SEIU, Emily's List, AFSCME, MoveOn.org and Organizing for America, which plan to spend $150 to 200 million on the 2010 elections. Please consider supporting our efforts to Take America Back by making a generous contribution today.

Stop the EPA Energy Takeover!

Over the past several months FreedomWorks members around the country have been working hard to support the Murkowski Resolution, a bipartisan effort that would stop the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) plan to enact massive energy regulations under the Clean Air Act. This backdoor cap and trade scheme would regulate carbon emissions like CO2 and be administered by unelected bureaucrats. That means sky-high energy costs and lost American jobs as industry moves overseas. The Murkowski Resolution, backed by 41 other senators, would stop this EPA power grab and it needs our support. A vote will be held on Thursday, June 10th and our senators need to hear from us. Please visit our campaign action center for talking points, instructions, and important action items.

This is an important vote that could save jobs and set the stage for the big 'cap and tax' showdown this summer. Help us cross the finish line and ask your senators to support the Murkowski Resolution today!

September 12th, 2010 and August 28th, 2010

Finally, we are looking forward to hosting a major rally only weeks before the elections in November. Many of you joined us on September 12th, 2009 as we marched on Washington with hundreds of thousands of people to send a message to Congress and President Obama. This year we are going to join together again in Washington to remind the politicians that we have not, and will not go away. Our focus this year will be to Take America Back in 2010. Please join us on September 12th, 2010 for another Taxpayer March on Washington! RSVP TODAY!

Also, we are excited to announce our new strategic partnership with Glenn Beck, who is organizing a rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on August 28th. Glenn has told us that his event is not a political event, nor a tea party, but rather a gathering of like-minded people from around the country who will come together to raise money for the troops. We will be supporting Glenn's event, and he will continue to work with us and tell his listeners and viewers that FreedomWorks is THE organization that has the capability and know-how to Take America Back in 2010.

We are excited about everything that is happening this year, and we are thrilled that you are an essential part of this organization. Together we will continue to work together to build a powerful coalition of limited government groups to make a long-lasting impact on our culture and politics in America.

Please be sure to stay in touch with us via email, and follow us on twitter and facebook, as we provide updates on all of these big projects for 2010. If we stick to our principles, and keep working hard, we will surely be victorious in the end.

More Hilarious Emails from Freedom Works!

MeanMesa just simply HAD to post these stinky babies.  Even measured against other "mass emailing" from the Dick Armey Freedom Works Factory, these are just too good not to share.

For MeanMesa visitors from outside the US, a brief explanation.  From SourceWatch:

Dick Armey is the Chairman of FreedomWorks (previously Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE), and co-chairman of the Alliance for Retirement Prosperity. A lifelong Republican, Armey served as Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2002.

Mr. Armey expanded the, uh, valuable contacts he made while he was running the House of Representatives into a lucrative LLP (lawyerin' -  lyin' - propaganda) machine contracted to maintain the Tea Baggers' incendiary idiocy flaming ahead blindly until the next election.  There has never been a special interest lobby, richly funded by neo-con oligarchs, that Mr. Armey hasn't fallen madly in love with.

Yuck.

The emails:

Volunteers Needed to Get Out The Vote in Utah Senate Race

Dear Chad,

I wanted to make you aware of an exciting opportunity that we as limited government conservatives have to replace a big government RINO (Republican In Name Only!) in the U.S. Senate with a true-blue defender of the constitution who will work hard to enact a fiscally conservative agenda.
FreedomWorks PAC is making the Utah Senate Race and incumbent Senator Bob Bennett a key target this cycle by supporting Mike Lee; a constitutional conservative who I believe will stand strong against the Left in their efforts to take away more of our fundamental freedoms.

Lee of course stands in stark contrast to incumbent Senator Bob Bennett. Senator Bennett has been in Congress for 18 years and has become an active advocate of big government. He supported the Wall Street Bailout (TARP), his own version of socialized medicine, and has even referred to the U.S. Constitution as an "outdated agrarian document."

We are proud to support Mike Lee as Senator Bennett's replacement in Washington, D.C. And to that end, though you may not live in Utah and can’t cast a vote in this race, as a FreedomWorks Member you have the ability to take part in a Get Out The Vote (GOTV) phone project that we will be engaging over the next two weeks to ensure Mike Lee beats Senator Bennett at the Utah Republican Convention’s nominating election on May 8th.

If you would like to help us with this effort, please contact Director of Campaigns Brendan Steinhauser at bsteinhauser@freedomworks.org or (202)-379-6583.

I hope that you will take part in this critical project. Even though you may not live in Utah, this race is of national importance and it gives us as limited government conservatives a real opportunity to replace a wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing liberal with a true champion of freedom in the U.S. Senate.

Sincerely,

Dick Armey
Chairman, FreedomWorks

P.S. As a Member of FreedomWorks you can get more actively involved and support FreedomWorks PAC efforts to Take America Back in 2010. Please consider a generous contribution that will have a real impact on the key races we are targeting this year – click here!

Pursuant to federal law, FreedomWorks established the FreedomWorks PAC. It is permitted to solicit funds only from FreedomWorks members. These funds will be used to make contributions to federal candidates and to produce, distribute and air communications that are not permitted to be done by FreedomWorks. As a FreedomWorks member, you will be entitled to receive additional information, as well as make contributions to FreedomWorks PAC and get further involved in efforts to Take America Back in 2010!

Urge Congress to Oppose Kerry-Graham-Lieberman Cap and Trade Bill

Dear Chad,

Apparently members of Congress have too much time on their hands. Just a few short weeks after ramming ObamaCare through, Senators Kerry, Graham, and Lieberman are already preparing for their next attack on the American taxpayer: the poorly named "American Power Act."

A far better name for this legislation would be the "American Power Grab." Little more than cap and trade in disguise, the bill would be a massive job-killing energy tax. In fact, the largest tax hike ever, and would hit the poor and middleclass, who spend a higher proportion of their income on essentials like electricity and fuel, the hardest. when American families are already struggling to make ends meet in our current economic downturn.

Cap and trade, or cap and tax, would mean sky high energy prices for consumers, but a new government slush fund for Washington. A twenty-seven cent "Fuels' Fee" on every gallon of gasoline included in the bill means not just higher prices at the pump, but higher prices on shipping and food production. It's hard to think of an area of life these higher costs won't affect. Higher energy costs will put the cost of doing business through the roof and send American jobs overseas at a time of record unemployment.

Altogether, this is far too high a price to pay for nothing in return. Any impact the legislation might have on global climate temperatures is too small to measure. The risks, on the other hand, are clear.
and urge your legislators to stand up for American families and businesses by opposing the Kerry-Graham-Lieberman "American Power Act."

To take on this new economy killer, FreedomWorks is relaunching our Cap and Trade Online War Room - full of important tools that make it easy for you to take action and send our leaders a clear message through phone calls, a petition, talking points, boots on the ground activism ideas, and issue development page to read the current state of play and opinion. It is essential to get out of the gate early and stop this threat before it can gain any traction. As we know all too well from past experience, Pelosi, Reid, and their allies will use any trick in the legislative handbook to get their big-government policies through. The sooner we put a stop to this, the better.

Although it is still only April, it's clear that Washington is gearing up for a long, hot summer and we'll have to be on the alert for power grabs and higher taxes like this. The best way that we can prepare for any situation is to continue growing the movement and getting more people involved.

Then forward this email to a friend and urge them to take a stand alongside you.

As always, thank you for your support and fidelity to the cause of Freedom.

Sincerely,

Matt Kibbe
President and CEO, FreedomWorks

P.S. As you know, the April 15th Tax Day Tea Parties were a resounding success! April 16th we immediately began laying the groundwork for another massive September 12th March on Washington. So make sure you get it on your calendar and invite a friend so we can be twice as big as last year! We will be confirming and posting details as they happen. See you in September.

Go ahead, have a good laugh -- then take a shower and make your own plans for the mid-term election campaign!

A MeanMesa "Quickie" -Tea Bagger Email Traffic

MeanMesa continues to receive hilarious emails from Dick Armey's Law Firm over the "signature" of the Tea Baggers.  We thought perhaps MeanMesa Visitors would enjoy looking over a couple more real "doozies."

Dear Chad,

This Thursday on Tax Day, hundreds of thousands of citizens will take to the streets to show President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid that freedom loving Americans have had enough.

We have had enough of their willingness to saddle future generations with unprecedented debt.

We have had enough of being told that the liberals know how to spend our hard-earned money better then we do.

We have had enough of being dismissed and derided by the Washington, D.C. political elite.

Now is the time to Take America Back from these advocates of Big Government. Click Here to Support Tax Day Tea Party Events All Over The Country!

With the April 15th Tax Day Tea Parties rapidly approaching, we are working around the clock to ensure turnout is through the roof at every one of the 500+ local rallies across the country.

But we need your help.

First and most importantly, please be sure to show up at one of the many Tea Party rallies taking place all over the country. Better yet, enlist your family and bring your friends! A list of protests nationwide can be found by clicking here, so find one nearby - or make the trip to Washington, D.C for our Tea Party - and take to the streets this Thursday.

Critical efforts are underway to ensure the Tax Day Tea Parties are the biggest ever. But we need additional resources to mobilize hundreds of thousands of people to show up and make their voices heard. You can help by supporting:

Live streaming events so people take part from home
Tea Partier Sponsorships

Logistical Rally Costs

On Tax Day we must Take America Back and show Americans that freedom is now (and always has been) dead-center on the political spectrum.

Of course, the very most important way to get involved is by attending your local rally next Thursday. And remember, the more the merrier, so make sure all your friends and family make it out too. In fact, why not forward this email to anyone you know who is concerned about the direction of our country?

And if you can, please make a donation to support the hundreds of Tax Day rallies around the country. If you want to also help raise additional awareness for tax day activities in the spirit of the tea party movement, also consider getting your own "4/15/2010 - Take America Back" t-shirt. happening all around the country on April 15th.

Before you laugh yourselves silly, MeanMesa has also received email "from the other side," you know, our side.  Here are a couple of recent emails from Democrats "answering back."

Chad --

House Republican Leader John Boehner told a right-wing radio host this week that repealing health insurance reform was his "number one priority."

It is stunning that House Republicans will make their number one priority repealing benefits and rights for Americans, raising taxes, and turning our health care system back over to insurance companies. Help us send a strong message to Republicans trying to roll back this historic step forward for the America people.

Co-sign my open letter to Republican Leader Boehner: Our "number one priority" should be standing up for families struggling in this tough economy -- not siding with the insurance companies to deny Americans quality, affordable health care.

Not only does health insurance reform, improve our health care system, it will also reduce the deficit by more than $1 trillion over 20 years, create millions of jobs, and provide small business owners with important tax credits.

The House Republican leadership should start saying no to the special interests of the health insurance industry, and start saying yes to American families by working with us to create jobs and get the economy back on track.

Co-sign my open letter to Republican Leader Boehner: Our "number one priority" should be standing up for families struggling in this tough economy -- not siding with the insurance companies to deny Americans quality, affordable health care.

Thank you for your continued support.

DCCC Chairman

Chad --

FIGHT BACK AGAINST TEA PARTY EXTREMISTS
Flush from their surprise victory in the Massachusetts Senate race, Tea Party extremists have set their sights on Pennsylvania-12, the Congressional seat left vacant by the passing of Congressman John Murtha.

Their friends at the National Republican Congressional Committee have already unleashed a $273,000 media campaign attacking Democratic candidate Mark Critz and demonizing President Obama's health insurance reform.

The Republican Party and their Tea Party allies see the May 18th special election as a national test between President Obama's vision for the future and their bizarre nostalgia for failed Republican policies from the past.

The truth is the DCCC knows how to win elections like these - we have won five straight special elections including the first House election since health care reform passed this past Tuesday.

But, we can't do it without you - we need to stay competitive in all of the 2010 races so please help us raise $300,000 before Monday.

Contribute $35, $50, or more to the DCCC and if you donate right now and your contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a group of committed Democrats.

Today Tea Party activists are gathering in Washington, DC to rally their base, protest health insurance reform and gear up for the Pennsylvania special election.

This is a critical moment for Democrats. We achieved a historic victory with the passage of health care reform. We have the momentum. We must not let the Tea Partiers slow us down.

We must demonstrate to political pundits and the media that House Democrats are strong, united and committed to moving America forward.

The best way you can help is to rush a generous contribution to the DCCC today.

Contribute $35, $50 or more to the DCCC and if you donate right now and your contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a group of committed Democrats.

The DCCC has won five competitive special elections in a row. We need to continue our winning streak. Please let me hear from you today.

Thank you,

Jon Vogel
DCCC Executive Director

P.S. Winning the special election in Pennsylvania is critical to maintaining our momentum. We need your help. Contribute $35, $50 or more the DCCC and if you donate right now and your contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a group of committed Democrats.

MeanMesa thought everyone might use a little comic relief!  Yes, the neo-cons are flooding the nation with outright lies and inflammatory "one liners," but -- just remember, the adults are back in charge.

Toxic Desert Weeds from the GOP

Naturally, MeanMesa assumes that our visitors have, over time, built up an impressive filtration system for cleaning out toxic email traffic from their computer accounts.  However, a few weeks ago MeanMesa decided to "open the flood gates" to the now heavily soiled, "grassroots" thugs at Dick Armey's Freedom Work's spawn, the Tea Baggers.

Just in case anyone has accidentally been contaminated with the idea that the Tea Baggers are actually any more than a merry band of semi-literate hill billies and bigots -- a very real possibility given that the wholly owned media has obsessively and painfully represented them as a potent new political force when they are actually only a few overweight white Southerners and Cowboy "Patriots" -- our visitors should be armed with a few facts about them.  Rather than bumble through another repetition of the bizarre collection of peccadilloes, MeanMesa will happily "hand the sabre" to Jon Stewart as he is cited in a recent Crooks and Liars article:

Back in April, the Daily Show's Jon Stewart offered some sound advice for frothing at the mouth Tea Baggers, "I think you might be confusing tyranny with losing." Now five months after their Tax Day outburst, thousands of vein-popping Obama opponents descended Saturday on Washington for Tea Party II. But while Glenn Beck's furious followers alternately slandered the President as a "fascist," a "communist" and worse, they remained unencumbered by either the thought process - or the truth.

Here, then, are 10 Lessons for Tea Baggers:

  1. President Obama Cut Your Taxes
  2. The Stimulus is Working
  3. First Ronald Reagan Tripled the National Debt...
  4. ...Then George W. Bush Doubled It Again
  5. Republican States Have the Worst Health Care
  6. Medicare is a Government Program
  7. Barack Obama is Not a Muslim
  8. Barack Obama was Born in the United States
  9. 70,000 Does Not Equal 2,000,000
  10. The Economy Almost Always Does Better Under Democrat
As in April, the Tea Baggers continued to display their fundamental misunderstanding of U.S. history and the American Revolution. Apparently, the right-wing zealots are outraged by no taxation with representation.

As promised, Barack Obama in the stimulus package delivered on his pledge of tax relief for 95% of American households. Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) didn't only jump start gross domestic product and refill empty state coffers in the second quarter of 2009. As Nate Silver thoroughly documented, "Obama has cut taxes for 98.6% of working households."

Nevertheless, raging Tea Baggers spouting Republican Tax Day lies took to the streets not to thank the President, but to blame him for the tax cuts they received.

A prime target of Bagger bashing, the $787 billion stimulus package passed over the near-total obstructionism of Congressional Republicans is already paying huge dividends for the economy.

To be sure, at 9.7% the unemployment rate remains dismal. But the impact of ARRA and other government actions extends well beyond the Obama administration's claim it has created or preserved one million jobs to date. As I documented in August:

After steep declines of 5.4% and 6.4% in the previous two quarters, gross domestic product fell only 1% in the last three months. And while the ARRA overall added "up to 3 full percentage points of annualized growth in the quarter," President Obama's stimulus helped precisely where it was needed most - rescuing devastated state budgets.

Earlier this month, the reliably Republican Wall Street Journal agreed the Obama administration has helped stem the bleeding from the Bush Recession:

Many forecasters say stimulus spending is adding two to three percentage points to economic growth in the second and third quarters, when measured at an annual rate. The impact in the second quarter, calculated by analyzing how the extra funds flowing into the economy boost consumption, investment and spending, helped slow the rate of decline and will lay the groundwork for positive growth in the third quarter -- something that seemed almost implausible just a few months ago. Some economists say the 1% contraction in the second quarter would have been far worse, possibly as much as 3.2%, if not for the stimulus.

For the third quarter, economists at Goldman Sachs & Co. predict the U.S. economy will grow by 3.3%. "Without that extra stimulus, we would be somewhere around zero," said Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist for Goldman.

For Tea Baggers supposedly concerned that "deficit spending is out of hand," history apparently began only on January 20, 2009. Because while President Obama rightly resorted to massive deficit spending to rescue the American economy from calamity, it was Ronald Reagan who ushered in the now-standard Republican practice of "spending our children's inheritance."

As Steve Benen rightly noted, it was not Reagan but President Obama whose stimulus plan delivered the largest two-year tax cut in history. And as it turns out, what Saint Ronnie giveth, he also taketh away.

As predicted, Reagan's massive $749 billion supply-side tax cuts in 1981 quickly produced even more massive annual budget deficits. Combined with his rapid increase in defense spending, Reagan delivered not the balanced budgets he promised, but record-settings deficits. Ultimately, Reagan was forced to raise taxes twice to avert financial catastrophe (a fact John McCain learned the hard way from Tom Brokaw last October). By the time he left office in 1989, Ronald Reagan nonetheless more than equaled the entire debt burden produced by the previous 200 years of American history.

Following in Reagan's footsteps, George W. Bush buried the myth of Republican fiscal discipline.

Inheriting a federal budget in the black and CBO forecast for a $5.6 trillion surplus over 10 years, President George W. Bush quickly set about dismantling the progress made under Bill Clinton. Bush's $1.4 trillion tax cut in 2001, followed by a $550 billion second round in 2003, accounted for the bulk of the yawning budget deficits he produced.

Like Reagan and Stockman before him, Bush resorted to the rosy scenario to claim he would halve the budget deficit by 2009. Before the financial system meltdown last fall, Bush's deficit already reached $490 billion. (And even before the passage of the Wall Street bailout, Bush had presided over a $4 trillion increase in the national debt, a staggering 71% jump.) By this January, the mind-numbing deficit figure reached $1.2 trillion, forcing President Bush to raise the debt ceiling to $11.3 trillion.

Tea Baggers take note: the Bush tax cuts delivered a third of their total benefits to the wealthiest 1% of Americans. And the staggering $2 trillion price tag for Bush's giveaway to the richest needing it least dwarfs the estimated $900 billion cost over 10 years of President Obama's health care proposals.

George W. Bush didn't merely spend the health care money on a windfall for America's rich and famous. He helped ensure red states continued to provide the worst health care in the nation.

Call it the Iron Law of Birtherism: the movement which denies President Obama's Hawaiian birth is strongest precisely in those states where Republicans poll best and health care is worst.

A 2007 Commonwealth Fund report, "Aiming Higher: Results from a State Scorecard on Health System Performance," examined states' performance across 32 indicators of health care access, quality, outcomes and hospital use. Topping the list were Hawaii, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. Bringing up the rear were the Bush bastions of Kentucky, Louisiana, Nevada, Arkansas, Texas, with Mississippi and Oklahoma. The 10 worst performing states were all solidly Republican in 2004. (8 voted for McCain in 2008.)

The extremes in health care performance are startling. For example, 30% of adults and 20% of children in Texas lacked health insurance, compared to 11% in Minnesota and 5% in Vermont, respectively. Premature death rates from preventable conditions were almost double (141.7 per 100,000 people) in Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi compared to the top performing states (74.1 per 100,000). Adults over 50 receiving preventative care topped 50% in Minnesota compared to only 33% in Idaho. Childhood immunizations reached 94% in Massachusetts, compared to just 75% in the bottom five states. As the report details, federal and state policies, such as insurance requirements and Medicaid incentives, clearly impact health care outcomes.

(In May, the Washington Post rightly noted it would be blue state residents funding health care reform for their red state brethren in an article titled, "A Red State Booster Shot." The grandstanding of Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal et al notwithstanding, the same one-way flow of taxpayer dollars from Washington to red states, of course, is a permanent feature of federal spending in general. And yet a 2008 survey predictably showed 68% of Republicans believe the U.S. has the best health system in the world, compared to only three in 10 Democrats.)

Among the greatest ironies of the health care debate is the specter of Republicans feigning concern over Medicare. The same party that opposed Medicare in the 1960's and tried to slash its budget in the 1990's now scares the bejesus out of 46 million American elderly recipients by warning of bogus death panels and Democrats "sticking it to seniors with cuts to Medicare."

Even more ironic is that a majority of the GP faithful do not seem to know that Medicare is a government-run program. As I noted previously:

In July, Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) described an angry constituent who confronted him at a South Carolina town hall meeting, "keep your government hands off my Medicare." Despite his best efforts to explain that Medicare is a government program, the voter, Inglis lamented, "wasn't having any of it."

But as recent data from Public Policy Polling revealed, that same cognitive failure is now far more widespread than swine flu. While 39% of all Americans responded that the government should "stay out of Medicare," 59% of self-identified conservatives and 62% of McCain voters hold that oxymoronic view.

An April survey by the Pew Research Center showed that 11% of Americans believe Barack Obama is a Muslim, a figure largely unchanged since its polling started in March 2008. Yet 17% of Republicans and 19% of white evangelicals (74% of whom voted for John McCain) insist the President is an adherent of Islam, despite his repeated pronouncements and decades of church attendance to the contrary.

Judging from their signs, a much larger percentage of Tea Baggers maintain this error.

As it turns out, the Tea Bagging faithful are even worse at basic geography than comparative religion. The Birther contagion is running rampant among the ranks of Republicans. And even with repeated treatments of birth certificates and Hawaiian newspaper announcements from 1961, there is apparently no cure.

A DailyKos/Research 2000 poll found that a stunning 58% of Republicans did not believe (28%) or were unsure (30%) that President Barack Obama was in fact born in the United States. To be sure, this is a Southern pathology, a region home to 69% of all birthers and the only part of the country to increase its Republican presidential vote in 2008. The PPP survey only confirmed the chronic birtherism plaguing the Republican Party:

Only 62% of respondents reported believing that Obama was born in the United States. 10% thought he was born in Indonesia, 7% thought he was born in Kenya, 1% thought he was born in the Philippines, and 20% weren't sure. Among Republicans 44% think he was not born here while just 36% believe that he was.

(In a promising development, only 10% of respondents weren't sure if Hawaii is part of the United States. On this score, conservatives were only slightly more confused than liberals and moderates.)

Math, too, provides another stumbling block for the masterminds and acolytes of Tea Party movement.

After FreedomWorks president Matt Kibbe wrongly inflated the estimates of the 9/12 crowd in Washington DC at 2,000,000, ABC and others corrected the fraud. But that didn't stop the conservative blogosphere from parroting the charade debunked by both DC police - and simple comparative photography.
As Nat Silver concluded, "Size Matters; So Do Lies."

The way this false estimate came into being is relatively simple: Matt Kibbe, the president of FreedomWorks, lied, claiming that ABC News had reported numbers of between 1.0 and 1.5 million when they never did anything of the sort. A few tweets later, the numbers had been exaggerated still further to 2 million. Kibbe wasn't "in error", as Malkin gently puts it. He lied. He did the equivalent of telling people that his penis is 53 inches long.

If the extended Pinocchio nose and a similarly over-inflated phallus are the apt symbols of the Tea Party movement, the Tea Baggers are in for one final, rude awakening. For all of their histrionics about "socialism" and "communism", the historical record clearly shows the economy overall and the stock market in particular almost always do better under Democratic presidents.

Just days after the Washington Post documented that George W. Bush presided over the worst eight-year economic performance in the modern American presidency, the New York Times in January featured an analysis comparing presidential performance going back to Eisenhower. As the Times showed, George W. Bush, the first MBA president, was a historic failure when it came to expanding GDP, producing jobs and fueling stock market growth. And across almost every indicator (article here, charts here), Democrats outperformed their Republican counterparts.

The superior performance of Democratic presidents covers virtually the entire spectrum of economic indicators. As Elliott Parker of the University of Nevada, Reno detailed in a 2006 paper, since 1949 Democratic administrations have done better than Republican ones when it comes to unemployment (5.2% to 6.0%), job creation (-.0.4% decrease in unemployment, compared to 0.3% increase), GDP growth rate (4.2% to 2.9%), and even corporate profits as a share of GDP. And to be sure, he found the Dow benefits from Democrats in the White House.

There's no shortage of studies to show that stock market returns are higher under Democratic leadership. (As it turns out, Wall Street's performance is also better when Democrats control Congress.) In 2000, Pedro Santa-Clara and Rossen Valkanov of UCLA's Anderson School of Business concluded that "that the average excess return in the stock market is higher under Democratic than Republican presidents - a difference of 9 percent per year for the value-weighted portfolio and 16 percent for the equal-weighted portfolio." As the New York Times noted of UCLA study in 2003:

"It's not even close. The stock market does far better under Democrats...

As the spent Tea Baggers wipe the spittle from their lips at they trudge home from Washington, they would do well to remember one final truth. The words of Harry Truman, the man Sarah Palin cited as her model, are as true today as when he uttered them generations ago:

"If you want to live like a Republican, vote Democratic."

Yeah, yeah.  All this seems to be a lot to read, but it is important to be well prepared when one of these miscreants begins to bombast Republican lies.  Why just yesterday a deeply challenged butcher at a local market asked MeanMesa if I had "buyer's remorse" about voting for Obama.  He had seen my OBAMA tee shirt, and felt, for some dismal reason buried beneath a thousand talking points in his seriously handicapped remnant of conceptual logic, emboldened to make such an ill advised crack.

In fact, this ill advised, yet stalwart neo-con butcher had "thrown out this gauntlet" directly to MeanMesa while standing in line to buy some freshly made Hot Italian Sausage.   While other, less prepared sausage shoppers began to maneuver their shopping carts in a quiet pattern of retreat, MeanMesa, predictably, felt compelled to explore the conversation with this salmon fileting genius.

For a moment, it looked like the poor little neo-con's head was going to explode....

Of course, the specific term, "buyer's remorse," has been one of those phrases endlessly bandied forth by corporate media pundits and other whores -- both male and female -- as they try to sell some of the ideas presented in the citation above.  One can assume that, as simply another "talking point,"  it is far too similar to a Babylonian "dog fly" which has been unfortunately trapped in a blob of day old lip stick inadvertently deposited on one of those famous gold microphones during yesterday's drama festival masquerading as a "News Program."

Just a little more.  MeanMesa always tries to save the best for last.

We mentioned before that the flood gates had been left open for emails from the clients of Dick Armey's Lie Firm, Freedom Works.  That would be the Tea Baggers in one apparition or another.

Check out the following hilarious emails which rolled in during the last few days.

Online Grassroots Service Center will enable Activists to Make the Difference in Key Races that will "Take America Back" in 2010!

TO ALL FREEDOMWORKS MEMBERS:

Washington, DC - FreedomWorks PAC is pleased to announce the launch of FreedomWorksPAC.org; the web arm of the organization that will act as an online grassroots service center for millions of limited government advocates who want to make a difference on behalf of freedom in this critical election year.

FreedomWorks Members can access FreedomWorksPAC.org HERE.

On the site, accessible to FreedomWorks members only, grassroots activists view FreedomWorks PAC’s up-to-date list of targeted races. They can determine which candidates have been identified as “Champions of Freedom” and need their support and conversely those “Enemies of Freedom” that conservative activists must rally against and defeat. Each candidate then has their own unique page that activists can use to:

1. Access important background information on the candidate

2. Stay up to date on developments in the race including PAC sponsored events and rallies

3. Financially support FreedomWorks PAC efforts to impact their races

4. Download or request materials such as door hangers, brochures, yard signs, etc. - these grassroots materials in particular will be invaluable resources for activists to conduct their own home-grown Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts and make the critical difference in these key House and Senate contests.

In addition to issuing guidance to FreedomWorks members on which races they should get involved in, FreedomWorksPAC.org also solicits member feedback on other highly-contested Congressional contests that will help Take America Back. Through the site’s 2010 Battleground Survey, activists weigh in on other races that provide opportunities to unseat big government advocates and elect legislators that will actively fight on behalf of lower taxes, less government, and more freedom.

With today’s launch, FreedomWorks PAC added three races to a growing list of “Top Targets” by endorsing Jonathan Paton (R) for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, Tom Graves (R) for Georgia’s 9th Congressional District, and David Castillo (R) for Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, as Champions of Freedom. These three now join an impressive slate that includes: Marco Rubio (R) for Senate in Florida, Rand Paul (R) for Senate in Kentucky, Pat Toomey (R) for Senate in Pennsylvania, Mike Lee (R) for Senate in Utah, and Allen West (R) for Congress in Florida’s 22nd District.

FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey commented, “FreedomWorksPAC.org provides a new kind of grassroots service center for conservative advocates who want to impact key races this year. This model is only limited by the energy of the activists which, if the tea parties that began in 2009 and continue still today are any guide, points to a changing of the guard in the next Congress.”
Visit FreedomWorksPAC.org and find out what you can do to help Take America Back!

Final showdown against Obamacare 2.0 this weekend!

The House of Representatives is about to vote on a bill that would lead to a government takeover of one-sixth of our economy - and they are using every bullying tactic, some of them unconstitutional - to get their way. Speaker Pelosi will do anything to get every last vote, and it is up to us to defeat her and her horrible bill.

This weekend as the vote draws closer, please take some time out of your busy schedule to make one final push against Obamacare 2.0. Here is what you can do.

1) Call your congressman and tell him or her to vote NO on Obamacare 2.0, whether it is a "real" vote, or a vote to "deem that the bill be passed."

2) Protest outside the local, district office of your Congressman at 12pm on Saturday. You can find his or her office location by clicking here. Bring your friends and some signs, and alert the local media.

3) If you live in the DC area, join us on Saturday for one more protest against Obamacare 2.0. The 12pm protest at the Capitol building will be followed by a candlelight vigil in the evening. For more information about how you can participate, please contact us.

We have one long, final weekend to put a dagger into Obamacare 2.0. If we work together and continue to make phone calls we can convince enough Democrats to vote NO on Obamacare 2.0. This vote will be very close, so it is more important than ever that your congressman hears from you one last time.

Thank you for your tireless efforts to stop this awful government takeover of our healthcare system.

Sincerely,

Matt Kibbe
President
FreedomWorks

PS: Please support our campaign to stop Obamacare 2.0 by making a generous donation now.

So, after you have quit the hysterical laughing session, be SURE TO CONTRIBUTE!  Armey has only received a few million bucks from his neo-con clients, and he can use all the dough he can grab before the Tea Baggers fade ignominiously into Saint Ronald Reagan's "dust bin of history."

A Note to MeanMesa visitors:  We're working on getting the emails reduced to fit on the blog page.  Please check back later today!

Yup, yup!  The IT Guy, Dave, showed the old guy how to adjust HTML width code.

Damn.  This must be the best day ever!
