US Media: The Next Voice You'll Hear Will Be Progressive

So, Will Rachel Maddow Replace Chick Todd?
NBC may still have a "survival instinct" if it awakes in time.

Plenty of strikingly unusual things have been "laid bare" since The Donald converted what was left of the Fourth Estate into a quivering whore with way too much make up. Now, even though MeanMesa, perpetually an unabashed political junkie of the first water, was dutifully disgusted at the outset with the wild, repeating, media dalliance with the "glitz appeal" of this grotesque "non-candidate," the presumption around here [Short Current Essays' Galactic Head Quarters] was that millions of US voters would be blindly "feasting" on the endless pablum of this embarrassing media indulgence in a truly unsettling way as the "alphabet networks" loaded more and more billions of dollars worth of free coverage to his Presidential reality show.

Still, even given the abysmally low, political quality of these media extravaganzas, the voters' comprehension of what is transpiring around them has -- surprisingly -- surpassed the very "low bar" with which MeanMesa typically measures our national efforts at democracy. Further, it's not just the voters who have surprised these old bones -- it is also the networks' media consumers who are also behaving quite surprisingly, in this case, with an unexpected and encouraging new realization of "having seen the light."

The Sleeper Awakes, HG Wells [image_YouTUBE]
Following the traditional, utterly useless media coverage of previous election after dismal, tedious election, in every repetition another mind numbing stream of gaseous, superficial, carnival euphemisms masquerading as "political discourse," this year seems to have brought something quite remarkable and different. The 2016 political media world has, apparently, awakened all those heretofore credulous, comatose television watchers to glimpse a much clearer realization of just what these networks have been doing!

Yes, all these citizens in the electorate had become passive and sponge-like, abused to the point that they would grudgingly accept practically anything that came their way from the politics industry. However, a good number of these citizens have finally now noticed what went on in the first few months of Trump's campaign. Remember how it was? The network news editors lined up like prostitutes at the lumber camp bar on pay day, continuously obsessed with the prospect of publicizing another dump truck full of The Donald's meaningless ramblings.

Well, there was a message to be delivered, and it was not anything which could be found in Donald Trump's confused "word salad" string of talking points. The message wasn't about Donald Trump.

The message was about the media.

After decades the networks' spell seems to have been broken -- the tattered veil had been lifted. After watching the ugly saga of sausage being made for The Donald, a shockingly painless conclusion suddenly became as "plain as day."

Believing the media was a dangerous mistake.

This wasn't anything particularly new to political junkies such as MeanMesa, but this revelatory and auspicious moment was clear evidence that this new understanding of the media was no longer merely dancing in an isolated tavern for political junkies. No, it was "loose" on the streets, and voters who had, before this, long since ceased being interested in politics were, once again, truly taking notice.

Of course we find ourselves in a predictably awkward juncture in the immediate sense. With the US media finally revealed as the soiled charlatan which could only be made to look relevant with sparkly, white toothed "news actors" and plenty of cosmetics, all these voters are now seeking out sources with more dignity and rational credibility.

American Political Discourse Rises From the Dead
If you haven't sampled some progressive media, give it a try.
Don't be embarrassed. Welcome aboard!

Exhuming the Fairness Doctrine [gif.source]
At the time of this posting right wing broadcast media is overwhelming the tiny voices of progressives on the air waves by around 200 to 300 per cent. This means that every time Thom Hartmann airs a single hour of The Thom Hartmann Show, 200 or 300 hours of right wing radio broadcasts are also aired. It's been this way for decades.

Ronald Reagan obliterated the broadcast Fairness Doctrine in 1987. That law required broadcasters using the public air waves to attempt to mix and balance their broadcast content. The Doctrine had been law since 1949.

Once that troublesome irritant had been permanently VETOed, things began roaring down hill almost immediately. It is quite safe to say that we are either at "the bottom" of the hill or damned close to it. The trillions of dollars worth of free political news coverage of the non-news worthy Trump turns out to be the "straw that broke this camel's back."

The industrial media's total abandonment of any fealty to "broadcasting for the public good" has been egregious, arrogant and infuriating. The billionaires are now unquestionably in charge of what's left of the old, traditional networks, but their "return on investment" may not be as impressive as they thought.

"It may not be good for America, but it's damn good for CBS," he said of the presidential race.

Moonves called the campaign for president a "circus" full of "bomb throwing," and he hopes it continues.

2/29/16: Leslie Moonves, CEO of CBS, Columbia Broadcasting System.

So, What Comes Next?
Those who think that the networks are about to re-create themselves,
please join the line forming behind the dumpster.

If anyone has been waiting for a media "rags to riches" story, you've come to the right place. After the despicable sell out to birth the Donald Trump "movement," American media consumers will be searching for an alternative. They won't pause at MSNBC for any longer than it will take to find out where Rachel Maddow has moved.

The alphabet networks won't change because they can't. They are now no more than pitiful waifs being driven by shockingly single minded corporate oligarchs demanding high enough ratings to successfully sell toothpaste commercials for cash. American media consumers may fiddle away a few more weeks or months trying to convince themselves that "it wasn't as bad as all that," but as they gradually sober up, it looks very much like they're going to develop a refreshing new appetite for fact based media which will actually inform them about what's happening.

Happily, the "new news" market they seek is already well established as a minuscule presence buried below the surface of the brain fever infested swamps of ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and FOX. Many of these listeners and viewers will soon discover that the major media markets in their large urban communities have been entirely co-opted by the sold out toothpaste sellers for years.

They will discover that any entity broadcasting a progressive message has been quietly transformed into an "all sports," "all tel-evangelical" or "all business" alternative. If the curiosity of these new truth seekers is piqued, they will also discover that these new "alternately themed content" broadcast offerings have generated painfully unrewarding ratings for those who directed these changes.

At this point yet another very smelly elephant is entering the room.

These recently slaughtered progressive media options have not been slaughtered to improve station ratings. They have been slaughtered at the well financed behest of the billionaires' think tanks. They have been censored.

If we were describing the changes make to a sleepy, family owned, 100 KW AM station in Beaver Falls, it would be one thing. We're not. We are describing huge, popular radio and television broadcasters in cities such as Boston, New York and San Francisco. All across the country massive cities with populations in the millions have become right wing broadcast infested wastelands.

Residents in these places have no choices in the broadcast content they are able to receive. It will be stridently right wing -- day and night, or it will be silence.

Big Players On the Horizon
Probably so big that they will change our idea of "big."
That won't be all that is new, either.

At some point, perhaps a few decades ago, the Democrats slept through the effective end of the Party's presence in the domestic media. Since then all "news" originating from the Democratic Party, its politicians or its spokesmen gradually became a "curious dalliance," evoking a few seconds of the evening "news" as an aside.

This was the state of American journalism at the beginning of what Donald Trump was preparing to "do" to it. Now, after The Donald actually has done this to it, it is in tatters. Neither the billionaires nor the progressives have any thought of being able to effectively "use" the domestic media in any manner which could be "persuasive" to the disgusted, exhausted men and women in the electorate.

The Democrats have already been speaking about creating a network of their own to counter FOX -- and largely the other industrial networks, too. MeanMesa has posted about this: Will the Democrats Finally De-fang FOX?/MeanMesa.

However, not to be left out of the fray -- the tempestuous, democracy wrecking scrap between two openly opposing networks -- the Republicans are, most likely, going to wind up with their own network after Trump loses this election next month.

Trump, once the polls began to paint him as The Wreck of the Ancient Mariner, has, predictably, begun to blame the "liberal media." This is not a shocking development. Republican politicians have been doing the same thing for a long time when their Presidential campaigns become a death march.

What's different is that Trump has collected millions of illiterate hill billies and bigots, and this "scum of the earth" actually believes what he has said about the "liberal media." They are prepared to consider his now essential inevitable election failure as evidence that the process was "rigged" -- his words. They are also, most likely, quite prepared to become irrationally violent about it.

Not a problem. The pundits are now reporting that The Donald, staggering out of the ashes of his election disaster, will start his own network, too. There is little reason to expect The Donald's "new news" network to be even as committed to democratic principles and the good of the nation as, say, Murdoch's FOX. In fact The Donald's network will probably make FOX look like a collection of shows that were too "lefty" for PBS or NPR.

Within two or three years our divided nation will be even more divided, and by "divided" MeanMesa is saying permanently divided.

Nonetheless, the media consumers are awakening. Both the new Democratic Party network and the maniacal "Trump Truth" are going to have to work extra hours to remain salable and consumable to their respective audiences -- both now already cutting their consumption and consuming what they haven't cut with historical levels of skepticism -- network skepticism.

Perhaps the days of the dithering rube utterly packed with right wing blather are ending -- at least for the many Americans who are currently in the process of realizing what the industrial networks, think tanks, corporatists and oligarchs have been trying to do to them.

What To Expect

Let's just give it a little time. MeanMesa feels quite confident that the previously befuddled media consumers in the American market place are about to correct this current monopolistic gamble by the uber rich. Broadcasting businesses and broadcasting equipment is among the most "fickle girlfriend" there is. The same electrons, nuts and bolts that are presently broadcasting endless, rancid hate propaganda today can be broadcasting content that is radically different as soon as tomorrow.

MeanMesa to the Rescue: Randi Rhodes' Golden Parachute

[A note for MeanMesa's international visitors:  Randi Rhodes is one of the finest progressive talk radio hosts ever to grace the AM air waves in the United States.  Very sadly -- but understandably -- she has announced that she will be leaving the air waves in a few days. You can visit Randi's FaceBook page at this link: https://www.facebook.com/randirhodes]

A Glimpse at Randi's Record

Due diligence for this post requires that everyone must understand the extremely close relation between Randi and MeanMesa.  Her progressive radio show was broadcast every weekday here in Albuquerque [The Randi Rhodes Show, AM 1350, KABQ, Albuquerque, 4-7 PM  week days], and Randi's voice was a daily visitor to MeanMesa's kitchen here at Galactic HeadQuarters. If you happen to be out of country, visit Randi's Face Book page to get acquainted with her.

Quite a lot has been published about her plans to leave the air.  Sample of few of the following links to get the story.  Naturally, there are "two views" of Randi, so MeanMesa has separated the links below between more or less "regular" articles and right wing conservative "wing nut" articles.

Regular articles:

Wing Nut articles:

Here, mention should also be made that pretty much all through Rhodes' career she has been relentlessly hammered by the servants of the oligarchs she so energetically exposed.  The mega-rich own and control around 95%+ of the broadcast media available on US radio.  Predictably, billionaires exerted their reactionary financial "editorial prerogatives" in these attacks without any guise whatsoever of restraint of pretending to honor media responsibility or even the fundamental democracy.

These miscreants have spent literally hundreds of millions to keep every hill billy in America "juiced to the gills" with hate radio -- always accompanied with and unending flow of fear and loathing of Randi.

Every "mean trick" which could be fabricated by the always ready oligarchic think tanks and implemented amid the lubricating luxury of oodles of billionaire money has landed on Randi Rhodes through the years.  Although she has never so much as blinked in her constant commitment to illuminate the oligarchic coup attempt, she has now, sadly, taken this decision for her own, personal well being and peace.

She will be a fond and enduring presence in the mind and heart of MeanMesa to the day these old bones say good bye to this world.

Rescuing Randi

While all of her fans would naturally hope that Randi might just whisk from the door of her studio to a lavish limousine, disappearing into the horizon to a secure, comfortable -- and much deserved -- wonderful retirement, this may not be the case.  With all this in mind, MeanMesa's thoughts predictably wander immediately toward possible solutions for Randi's more or less unavoidable "golden age cash flow challenges."

So, what kind of plan could possibly be cooked up by a geriatric, heart broken high desert blogger?

Re-establishing this old codger's peace of mind will clearly require "cooking up" a nice "golden parachute" scheme for the Queen of Progressive Radio. It may not be as complicated as it looks.

Here's the plan.

After a couple of months for rest and relaxation, Randi should begin a very aggressive medication regime of huge daily doses of massive amounts of tranquilizers, sedatives, mood stabilizers and the like.  After she has reached a nearly comatose state, a quiet proposal can be pitched to FOX.

See, FOX has a closet filled with gutless progressives which provides the network's "bite and snatch" punditry schedulers with a string of unconvincing dolts which are intended to reinforce the "two sides" disguise of the network's rancid "fair and balanced" nonsense.  Of course, none of these "toothless wonders" would ever fool anyone besides those denizens of FOX's base, but their tedious presence provides a perpetually safe "punching ball" target for the necessary audio sadism of the likes of Hannity or O'Reilly.

Obviously, the entire current cast of these FOX "theoretical progressives" has become rather thread bare, you know, utterly lack luster after literally years of dutifully losing every argument with Murdoch's Sunday School crowd.

Of course this is depressing, but in Randi's case, it is precisely the unlikely opening which offers all the financial security which could ever be required for our heroine's "happy ever after."

Randi's "quiet proposal" to insert herself into service as one of these FOX "punching ball" roles would inevitably lead to some sort of interview with Murdoch's management minions.  Now, although we would all normally assume that such an interview would become an almost instant, violent disaster, in her deeply sedated state, Randi would appear quite manageable and, hence, useful to the FOX programming manager interviewing her.

Further, the prospect of contracting the exact woman who, only a few months before, had been literally the Queen of Progressive Broadcast Radio into the role of a confused, submissive "token liberal" eye candy on FOX hate shows would be irresistible.  The million dollar contract could be prepared immediately.  It would, of course, include a very punitive "early termination" clause should the FOX folks, however unlikely, ever wanted to get rid of Randi before the term had been completed.

With all this hand, Randi could instantly cease all the medication.  Within a few days she would still be ushered into the daily "killing ground" of the chair to the left of the FOX broadcast "mouth junk" pundit, but -- instead of being the heavily sedated, passive, dithering wreck of a woman who had appeared for the interview -- it would be the old Randi!

MeanMesa assumes that after cashing out that big FOX "early contract termination" check, Randi and Howard would, this time for real, be slowly disappearing into the sunset -- aboard their new yacht -- on the way to their new beach front mansion in the Bahamas.

Another Short Note About America's Billionaires

Gee whiz.  MeanMesa's Billionaires Boys Club caught a little static from folks who consider it a bit too classist.  Oh well.  Here's a little something (from Huffington Post) Randi Rhodes added to her "homework" section yesterday.  (The Randi Rhodes Show, AM1350, KABQ, Albuqerque, 1 - 4 PM weekdays).

It seems that in 1994 the top 2% of Americans were worth around $2 trillion.  Last year, the same 2% were worth around $44 Trillion.  One in seven Americans is now below the poverty level.  One in four American children eat meals purchased with Food Stamps.  Middle class wages have been stagnant since Ronald Reagan.

Americans Vastly Underestimate Wealth Inequality, Support 'More Equal Distribution Of Wealth': Study

Americans vastly underestimate the degree of wealth inequality in America, and we believe that the distribution should be far more equitable than it actually is, according to a new study.

Or, as the study's authors put it: "All demographic groups -- even those not usually associated with wealth redistribution such as Republicans and the wealthy -- desired a more equal distribution of wealth than the status quo.

The report (pdf) "Building a Better America -- One Wealth Quintile At A Time" by Dan Ariely of Duke University and Michael I. Norton of Harvard Business School (hat tip to Paul Kedrosky), shows that across ideological, economic and gender groups, Americans thought the richest 20 percent of our society controlled about 59 percent of the wealth, while the real number is closer to 84 percent.

More interesting than that, the report says, is that the respondents (a randomly selected 5,522-person sample, reflecting the country's ideological, economic and gender demographics, surveyed in December 2005) believed the top 20 percent should own only 32 percent of the wealth. Respondents with incomes over $100,000 per year had similar answers to those making less than $50,000. (The report has helpful, multi-colored charts.)

The respondents were presented with unlabeled pie charts representing the wealth distributions of the U.S., where the richest 20 percent controlled about 84 percent of wealth, and Sweden, where the top 20 percent only controlled 36 percent of wealth. Without knowing which country they were picking, 92 percent of respondents said they'd rather live in a country with Sweden's wealth distribution.

As the new Forbes billionaires list, released Wednesday, testifies, the richest Americans are getting richer, even as the country as a whole gets poorer. After 2005 income inequality continued to balloon.

Delaware Tea Bag Dingbat: "Just don't masturbate!!!"

MeanMesa is watching with an unsettling mixture of psychopathic hilarity and an ill defined, semi-comatose, gastric disturbance.  A Sara Palin "look-alike" with a Messiah complex fixation about stopping all masturbation in the country has emerged from, uh, somewhere in a challenge for Joe Biden's old Senate seat in Delaware.  Weird?  Not really, at least not when we look at the remainder of the Republican tea baggers who have emerged in other places.

MeanMesa never thought there were that many rocks to crawl out from under.  For this story we join Miss Randi Rhodes (The Randi Rhodes Show, AM 1350 KABQ, Albuquerque, weekdays 1 -4 PM).  Posting-wise, we'll just leave the rest up to Randi.

Christine O'Donnell expressing a "lust free" victory cheer

Curiouser and curiouser: I’m tempted to say the Republican Party is going off a cliff, but it’s more like they’re going down a rabbit hole. This Tea Party stuff really is like something from Alice in Wonderland. All we need now is the Queen of Hearts yelling “off with their heads.” Come to think of it, I guess that’s Sarah Palin.

Last night, fringe Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell won a surprise victory in the Republican Senatorial primary in Delaware. I would say she pulled out a win, but Christine doesn’t approve of pulling anything. It only took some 30,000 votes—Delaware has a closed primary. From the look of the results, it was only open to nutbags. The Republican establishment is not optimistic about their new candidate’s chances of winning the general election. Karl Rove said that in the general election, O’Donnell is going to have to answer questions about “her own checkered background.” And her background is more checkered than Bear Bryant’s hat collection.

Video of Christine O’Donnell’s comments on masturbation have surfaced. Christine says “The Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery. So you can’t masturbate without lust.” And you know there are guys all over this country pleasuring themselves to this video of Christine saying that. Those guys are masturbating without lust, Christine. They’re masturbating with a mix of contempt and irony. Christine goes on to say “If he already knows what pleases him, and he can please himself, then why am I in the picture?” Give yourself a little credit, girl. If you can’t beat a bottle of lotion and a box of Kleenex, you probably shouldn’t be in the game.

O’Donnell’s anti-masturbation group was called SALT. What does a crusade against masturbation have to do with SALT? I could see it if it was saltpeter, but that’s a long acronym to have to think up a name for. SALT actually stands for “Savior’s Alliance For Lifting the Truth.” That’s an odd name for an anti-masturbation group. Wouldn’t the name “Stop All Lascivious Touching” be better? There! I did a better acronym off the top of my head than the one Christine O’Donnell came up with. I think masturbation must clear the mind.

Tea Bagger Hill Billies Visit the US Capitol

From Randi Rhodes Daily News (August 24, 2010), we find the following tips for Tea Baggers attending this week's Hate Rally, sponsored by radio psychopath, Glenn Beck.  We all know that the place is literally crawling with wrong colored people, and the idget crowd rolling in on the buses "jes't cain't be too kerful!"

After all, "Lots a' them cab drahvurs is A-A-ARABS, 'n thet means they's probbly smarter then yew are!"

To visit Randi's Daily News site, link here.

August 24, 2010

Good news for xenophobes who would like to get out more—a tea party blogger has put together a handy guide to Washington, DC for visitors who are coming for Glenn Beck’s rally this weekend. It covers the basics—inexpensive places to eat, and how to avoid black people, Arabs, and other minorities. Really. It’s kind of a Frommer’s guide for racists. The guide warns attendees about which subway lines and neighborhoods to avoid. It doesn’t specify why they should be avoided, but I don’t think it’s because of pricey restaurants. Classic. So Glenn Beck and the Tea Partiers have stolen the Lincoln Memorial for the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech. And they mark the occasion with a handy-dandy guide to avoiding black people. Hey Tea Partiers, you don’t have to wo rry about avoiding black people. Just go out in your crazy colonial outfits, and the black people will avoid you. But then so will any sane person.

This guide basically confines visitors to the area around the National Mall and all the monuments. So if a person follows these directions, they will probably only run into white people—extremely white people, as in “carved out of marble.” And they won’t see any minorities, unless you count Franklin D. Roosevelt in his wheelchair. Tea Partiers are warned that “Most taxi drivers and many waiters/waitresses (especially in local coffee shops like the Bread and Chocolate chain) are immigrants, frequently from east Africa or Arab countries.” So don’t be shocked when your waitress isn’t Flo from Mel’s Diner. And do people really have to be alerted that taxi drivers may be immigrants? I don’t think there’s been a white guy taxi driver since Travis Bickle. I’ll stick with the immigrants, thank you.

The guide specifically warns “Do not use the Green line or the Yellow line.” Ahem. You need to use the Green/Yellow line to get to the National Archives, where the Constitution is kept. Is the government aware what a dangerous neighborhood it’s in? Oh, and the guide also gives the home addresses of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, in case any Tea Partiers want to drop in when they’re not busy avoiding Middle Eastern cab drivers. If Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid want to be safe, maybe they should move to some place off of the Green or Yellow line… where Tea Partiers are afraid to venture.

The weirdest part is that in the middle of all this xenophobia, the guy’s restaurant recommendations include Indian tandoori and middle eastern restaurants. Hate is hate, but it shouldn’t keep you from enjoying a good baba ganoush.

Your tour guide also points out that “As a rule, African immigrants do not like for you to assume they are African Americans and especially do not like for you to guess they are from a neighboring country (e.g. Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia) with whom they may have political or military tensions.” Great. Now he’s Emily Post for racists. Something tells me this guy has had a few uncomfortable exchanges while ordering breakfast. “I’ll take the Denver omelet. Where you from anyway? Somalia? Am I right?”

MeanMesa shudders to think that this crowd used to actually be the Republican Party.

MeanMesa: A Winter's Afternoon

Of course we can all stand shocked, mouths agape, as we listen to some dirty shirt preacher tell us that the Haiti earthquake disaster -- and the poverty and despair there already -- is the result of the country's close association with voodoo. Egad. Just what we need.

Didn't hear it on The Randi Show?

So, stepping away from MeanMesa's usual ranting session, we'll just move on to a little something more local -- an account of this winter's afternoon in New Mexico.

We began with a nice winter's bike ride to visit a grad student friend to help out with a few recipes. He's just recently moved in with his girlfriend and, although he is now officially a Latin teacher at UNM, he's a bit rough on good recipes for home cooked meals.

Upon returning home, Randi Rhodes shared the audio of the creepy christian preacher on her afternoon radio show. After that, MeanMesa changed the schedule a little.

Haiti: 20,000 or more dead in the streets.

The pot roast went back into the freezer. We will get by just fine with a nice rice and vegetable casserole for our dinner entre this evening. After adjusting the weekly menu and the grocery list a little, a $10 "surplus" suddenly surfaced. After all, the roast can get added back later.

So, MeanMesa will get aboard the old bicycle and ride down the few blocks to the American Red Cross headquarters. They will be able to work wonders with just a few dollars more! Plus, they are all so nice when MeanMesa drops in with a skinny little (Social Security funded) check for $10!

You'd think that just this little dab of extra cash was going to correct all the social ills in the entire continent.

Hey, MeanMesa visitors! Getting any ideas?

Just in case anyone is interested in the recipe for the vegetable souffle, here is a copy for it -- lifted right out of Laurel's Kitchen.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice
1 cup diced celery
1 cup grated carrots
2 tablespoons minced onions
a few cloves of whole garlic
1 cup vegetable stock (we use chicken broth)
4 tablespoons margarine
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup of milk
3 eggs, separated
1 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger
2 teaspoons brown sugar

Directions:

Cook carrots, celery and onion in 1 tablespoon of margarine and 1/2 cup of stock for 10 minutes. (MeanMesa saute's this mix in olive oil first.)
Make a cream sauce with the remaining 3 tablespoons of margarine, the flour, the remaining 1/2 cup of stock and the milk.
Preheat oven to 375.
Mix vegetables, rice, seasonings, sauce and egg yolks together. (MeanMesa adds grated mozzerella and a small can of mushrooms.) Beat egg whites until stiff and gently fold into the mixture. Pour into a deep, well greased (sprayed) baking dish and bake for 30 or 40 minutes. Serve at once.
Serves 6.

(Laurel's Kitchen. Nilgiri Press. Petaluma California. 1976 ISBN: 0-915132-25-7)

Sit down and enjoy a nice, sensible cold weather dinner. Think about the people in Haiti who are having such a bad time. Think about joining in to try to help them out.

So, Pat Baby, here's MeanMesa's call. Our ten bucks against your medieval voodoo. Happy Holy, buddy.

Thanks for the Steadfastness of Progressive Radio

BLOGdoc 4 Dad Comes To Visit November 20, 2007

“Hey! How are ya’ doin’ kiddo?”

“Dad! I’m doin’ pretty well, at least as well as can be expected. Its great to see you!”

“What do you mean, ‘as well as can be expected?’ This is a darned beautiful day!”

“Gosh, dad. Don’t you ever get tuned into the news? There is a lot of trouble running around. I mean its trouble out in the world, but, you know, its the kind of trouble that can be right here in no time.”

“Hold it right there, son. I’ve seen this attitude creeping up on you for some time. So has your mom. She’s worried about this, too. In my day we were raised to, well, fit into America. We were taught by our parents, your grandparents, and our church goin’ that we could have happy, productive lives if we spent our time payin’ attention to our own business, not roaming around the whole world lookin’ for trouble. Why, when I was your age, I just concentrated on my family. None of us were out borrowin’ trouble, and that made us, well, satisfied. You know, calm. We were optimistic because we knew that we were living in the greatest nation ever made.”

“Since you’ve got me started, I’m just gonna go on ahead and tell you some things that have been on my mind for a while, now. See, maybe you didn’t notice, but I’ve been in your house when you were listening to that Air America on your radio. Your mom has heard it, too. She didn’t know what to think of it, but I did. There she was in our kitchen, asking me about what she heard.”

“Your mom didn’t know stuff like that was on the radio. That’s why she asked me about it. Since we’re talking about your bad attitude, I guess its time to tell you what I told her.”

“See, a radio station like that wants to convince you that there are millions of people listening to it. You know, millions of people hearing that stuff and believing what they hear. Yeah, that radio station wants to trick everybody listening to it into thinking that there are millions of other people who agree with that stuff. Those people are brainwashing everybody who listens to them.”

“Dad, they aren’t just guessing that many people are listening to them. They take the count the same way all the other networks do it.”

“Well, they might be doing that, but most of the people they get on the phone while they are out there counting listeners, most of those so called listeners just tuned in by mistake. They were just getting ready to look for something better when they called. Lots of the others are people in old folks homes who just sit around and listen to the radio without even knowing what’s on it. Nurses and people like that who are liberals tune in those radios to Air America on purpose because they know the old people won’t change the station.”

“There might be one or two thousand people who actually listen to that Air America, but the rest of the million listeners they claim to have are nothin’ more than accidents and old people. I’d figure that the other two million listeners they claim to have are just plain lies and payoffs.”

“Your mom and I always hoped that it was just some clumsy accident that tuned your radio into that station, but after we kept hearing it when we visited, we finally figured out that your were tuning it in on purpose. Normally, we wouldn’t have anything to say about it, but neither one of us can stand by while you play that stuff with the little one around where he can hear it. That’s our grandson we’re talking about. We can’t let that go on. See, he doesn’t understand the price he’s going to have to pay for being a liberal when he grows up.”

“Your mom’s already worried about her bridge partners findin’ out about you and your wife. That’s not to even mention what would happen if that ever got to her church friends. Do you even realize that Father Diaz talks about Air America from the pulpit? Warns us about the danger of lettin’ stuff like that get into us, you know, gettin’ into our souls and stuff like that.”

“Father Diaz warns us about those people. They’re broadcasting poison, and the more of that poison you hear the more you believe it, the more you want. They’re like the Moslems. They hate America. They hate our freedom! Those Air America radio people are trying to make you forget just how valuable our freedom is here in the United States.”

“They’re taking everyday news and turning it into half-truths and inflammatory deceptions of all sorts. I’ve never heard it, but I trust Father Diaz -- and my neighbor, you know, George. George and me have always been able to talk to each other in private when there’s trouble. George has read stuff in his magazines about Air America.”

“Those magazines he reads are about deep truth, stuff that’s too complicated to be in the newspaper. See, if Air America was as important as those people claim, there would be stuff about it in the newspaper or the tv news shows. I’m telling you. It doesn’t matter what kind of lies they’re telling about how many dirty little radicals they claim are listening to ‘em. If they amounted to anything important, they’d be all over the news.”

“See, they’re trying to trick you. They want you to turn into some kind of a whining liberal loser, then, when the truth finally comes out, you’re going to be stuck. You’re gonna’ be a liberal when everyone else in America is still on track. Then where will you be? And not just you but also your whole family. You haven’t been thinking about what might be good for them, have you?”

“George knows about this stuff. He’s read about what happens to people who get hooked on Air America. That bunch makes everyone who listens to ‘em sick on a steady diet of environment stuff. Those Air American liberals are always playing trick recordings about stuff Republicans have said and then laughing at them. Those people think they are so smart that it is okay for them to make fun of anyone who doesn’t agree with ‘em.”

“Son, if you have a shred of patriotism left in you after all that, you’re going to cancel that button on your radio that tunes in Air America. You need to get with the program. Because we live in America, we have to freedom to listen to anyone we like, and that American freedom I’m talking about has provided us with some of the best free press choices in the world.”

“Its good that you are interested in the news and everything, but you’ve got to take advantage of some better quality media. If you just try this, I’ll bet you’ll really like it. You won’t notice it all of a sudden, but you will start being more positive. You know, the stuff going on the world isn’t nearly so depressing if you just get a hold of the true story.”

“Hell, face it. Once you get away from those liberal wimps, your sex life will probably get better. I’m not saying that you need to listen to the radio while you’re having sex. If you fill yourself up in the daytime listening to real men, real Americans, it’ll last over into the night if you know what I mean.”

“You’ll sleep better if you start getting your news from the regular channels. Even if you don’t start sleeping better, those ABC, NBC, CBS channels all show commercials about the newest cutting edge drugs. In fact, that’s where your mother got the idea for her Xanterdrobe. She saw it on a commercial during the news and went right down to her female doctor and demanded it.”

“You’re never gonna’ hear about new stuff like that on Air America.”

“See, you’ve got a choice to make. You can go on poisoning yourself with PBS and Air America drivel or you can tune into to some of the good stuff. Its all over the radio, you know. Shows like the ones I listen to, you know, Rush and Hannidy, not only give you good solid news, but they’re funny. They’ll make you feel better. Why not just jump into the mainstream? Just try it. Tune into Savage and O’Riley. Join the human race the way millions of Americans do everyday. These guys are literally all over the radio they’re so popular. And, they wouldn’t be all over the radio if people didn’t listen to, and people wouldn’t listen to ‘em if they weren’t right. Put some good grown-up entertainment into your life. You’ll like it!”

“I’m glad I finally got all this off my mind.”
